The Sports Medicine Center
A native of New York City, Dr. Zaslav completed medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He then completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the New York University / Bellevue Medical Centers and also served as the Shoulder Surgery Fellow at Lenox Hill Hospital of New York.
After teaching for one year at the Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte, he moved to Richmond to continue practice as a specialist in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Advanced Orthopaedic Centers. He founded the Sports Medicine Center at AOC 20 years ago, and has since served as its Chief. He lectures and writes regularly on Orthopaedic topics, including shoulder injury and the treatment of Articular Cartilage Injury.
Past positions include serving as Team Physician for The New York University varsity athletic teams, Assistant Orthopaedic Surgeon for the New York Islanders (NHL), Sports Medicine Consultant to the US Tennis Association Mid Atlantic Region, Chief Team Physician and Director of Sports Medicine for the Richmond Rage (ABL), and Chief Team Physician for the Richmond Rhythm (IBL). He was also the Founding Director of the Performing Arts Medicine Center at HealthSouth Hospital and its Sports Motion Analysis Lab. He has served previously as The Chief of Surgery at Stuart Circle Hospital and The Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Health South Medical Center: Richmond, Virginia.

Dr. Higgs has served as Associate Team Physician for Harvard University Athletic Teams, the New England Patriots Professional Football Team, the Boston Bruins Professional Hockey Team, and the New England Revolution Professional Soccer Team. During his Residency at Columbia University, he served as Chief of Physicians for Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Yankees, New York Knicks(NBA) and the New York Rangers(NHL).
Dr. Higgs served his active duty obligation for a medical school scholarship as a Major with the U.S. Army where he became a highly decorated officer. He served in Seoul, South Korea, Heildelberg, Germany, and Taszar, Hungary during the Bosnian war.
Dr. Higgs is widely published in medical literature and has lectured at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Higgs is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Currently, Dr. Higgs is a Clinical Assistant Professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. He is the team physician for Henrico High School athletic teams and the team physician for the Richmond Rhythm, a professional basketball team in the International Basketball League.
