The Sports Medicine Center
A native of New York City, Dr. Zaslav completed medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He then completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the New York University / Bellevue Medical Centers and also served as the Shoulder Surgery Fellow at Lenox Hill Hospital of New York.
After teaching for one year at the Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte, he moved to Richmond to continue practice as a specialist in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Advanced Orthopaedic Centers. He founded the Sports Medicine Center at AOC 20 years ago, and has since served as its Chief. He lectures and writes regularly on Orthopaedic topics, including shoulder injury and the treatment of Articular Cartilage Injury.
Past positions include serving as Team Physician for The New York University varsity athletic teams, Assistant Orthopaedic Surgeon for the New York Islanders (NHL), Sports Medicine Consultant to the US Tennis Association Mid Atlantic Region, Chief Team Physician and Director of Sports Medicine for the Richmond Rage (ABL), and Chief Team Physician for the Richmond Rhythm (IBL). He was also the Founding Director of the Performing Arts Medicine Center at HealthSouth Hospital and its Sports Motion Analysis Lab. He has served previously as The Chief of Surgery at Stuart Circle Hospital and The Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Health South Medical Center: Richmond, Virginia.

Dr. Higgs has served as Associate Team Physician for Harvard University Athletic Teams, the New England Patriots Professional Football Team, the Boston Bruins Professional Hockey Team, and the New England Revolution Professional Soccer Team. During his Residency at Columbia University, he served as Chief of Physicians for Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Yankees, New York Knicks(NBA) and the New York Rangers(NHL).
Dr. Higgs served his active duty obligation for a medical school scholarship as a Major with the U.S. Army where he became a highly decorated officer. He served in Seoul, South Korea, Heildelberg, Germany, and Taszar, Hungary during the Bosnian war.
Dr. Higgs is widely published in medical literature and has lectured at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Higgs is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Currently, Dr. Higgs is a Clinical Assistant Professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. He is the team physician for Henrico High School athletic teams and the team physician for the Richmond Rhythm, a professional basketball team in the International Basketball League.

After earning a bachelor degree from Duke University, Dr. Reece received his Doctorate of Medicine with academic honors from the Medical College of Virginia/VCU. He then did an Internship at Wake Forest University Medical Center before returning to MCV/VCU to finish his Residency in Family Practice. He went on to the University of North Carolina Health System where he completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine, and now holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. Dr. Reece is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and member of the American and Virginia Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Other appointments include Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Practice at MCV/VCU, Assistant Physician of the Richmond Ballet, and Team Physician for Benedictine, St. Gertrude’s, and Highland Springs high schools, and consultant to Tidewater Academy, Kenston Forrest School, and Richmond Christian School. He continues to speak on current Sports Medicine issues at both local and national levels, and is published in several medical journals and texts.
Advanced Orthopaedic Centers welcomes Dr. Reece back to Richmond after serving as Team Physician for the University of Georgia. Other past positions in his wide range of experience in Sports Medicine include service as a team physician for several Richmond area high schools, the X-Games Summer Trials, the Richmond/Henrico County Open Golf Tournament (Nationwide Tour), the United States Olympic Swimming Team (2000 Olympic Trials), Elon College, the Carolina Hurricanes (NHL), and the New York Yankees Single A affiliate Greensboro Bats. His experience also includes extended time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks of the NBA.

Marion M. Herring has joined the AOC Sports Medicine and Shoulder Centers. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Washington and Lee University and his medical degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. He completed his Orthopedic training here in Richmond and completed an additional fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Duke University.
He began his career in Boone, North Carolina where he was the team physician for Appalachian State University and Lees McRae. He focused on treatment of complex knee, shoulder, and elbow injuries. He then worked as an Assistant Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. He continued to teach and practice sports medicine. His teaching and research was focused on treatment of knee, shoulder, and elbow problems.
At AOC, his practice focus continues to be sports medicine and complex problems of the knee, shoulder and elbow. He is subspecialty board certified in Sports Medicine. He teaches regionally and nationally on topics including arthroscopic shoulder surgery, shoulder replacements, shoulder instability, and arm injuries in the young throwers. He has recently published papers on complex reconstruction of unstable shoulders and evaluation and treatment of shoulder dislocations. In 2009, he will serve as an associate editor for The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow. He presently works at St. Francis Hospital and Henrico Doctor's Parham Hospital.
Dr Herring is also an avid triathlete. He competes on a local and national level. He won the Virginia Triathalon Series points race for his age group and recently qualified for the World ½ iron man championships for 2009. He uses his experience as an athlete in combination with over 10 years of sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction to treat each patient with precision and empathy.
Dr. Herring and his wife have three children.
